Before you borrow

  • Compare loans by total interest and fees, not by EMI alone.
  • A longer tenure lowers the EMI but raises total interest a lot.
  • Keep all EMIs together within a comfortable share of your monthly income.

Prepayment

  • Prepaying early in the loan saves the most interest.
  • RBI: no prepayment charges on floating-rate loans to individuals (non-business) sanctioned or renewed from 1 January 2026.
  • Ask your bank whether a prepayment cuts the tenure or the EMI; this tool cuts the tenure.

About this calculator

  • Uses the standard reducing-balance EMI formula shown under the schedule.
  • Banks may round differently or charge broken-period interest, so small differences are normal.
  • Floating rates change over time; this shows today’s rate for the full tenure.

Questions about this tool

How is EMI calculated?

EMI = P × r × (1 + r)^n ÷ ((1 + r)^n − 1). P is the loan, r is the yearly rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100, and n is the number of months.

What is the EMI on ₹10 lakh at 10.99% for 5 years?

About ₹21,737 a month. Type the numbers above to check any loan.

Does prepayment reduce EMI or tenure?

Banks usually keep the EMI and shorten the tenure, which saves the most interest. This calculator does the same.

Why is my bank’s EMI slightly different?

Banks may round, charge interest for the days before the first EMI, or use a slightly different rate. The difference is usually small.
